IN THE MEDIA: Qantas iPad coup

By David Swan at IT Wire
IT equipment designer and manufacturer LocknCharge – PC Locs today announced it will deliver a fleet of customized galley carts to support Qantas’ new in-flight entertainment and Apple iPad Q-Streaming service.

LocknCharge – PC Locs will supply Qantas with the necessary equipment to store, transport, sync and charge up to 5000 Apple iPads, on the Boeing 767 fleet, which will operate on flight routes across Australia and between Australia and Honolulu, Hawaii.

Passengers will apparently be able to stream over 200 hours of on demand entertainment wirelessly direct to the iPad provided to every customer in Business and Economy.

James Symons, CEO of LocknCharge and PC Locs, said the partnership is the result of a six month collaboration between the company and Qantas to design and deliver a hi-tech sync and charge galley cart.

Each airplane will carry four of these carts providing 256 iPads.

“By teaming up with the globally iconic Qantas, we helped lead the way bringing iPad technology to the airline’s in-flight experience,” Symons said.

“Together we worked through the many challenges that come with developing the right technology and equipment needed to support the constant use of hundreds of iPads on each flight.

“Our solution is designed to specifically integrate with the Qantas personnel work environment and adhere to strict aviation standards,” said Symons.

Qantas Domestic Chief Executive Officer Lyell Strambi said customers travelling on Qantas’ B767 fleet will now enjoy updated cabin interiors and in-flight entertainment (IFE) streamed direct to iPads in every seat.

“Our customers were the first in the world to experience the ground-breaking Wi-Fi entertainment technology and we received great feedback from our customers during the trial this year.”

Deployment of the LocknCharge – PC Locs solution commenced in October 2012 and is scheduled for completion by March 2013.
