How Much Does Your Device Repair and Replacement Process Really Cost?

As more employees shift to remote or hybrid work models the cost of mobile device repair and replacement is expected to rise. At home, kids spill drinks on laptops, pets step on keyboards and food crumbs damage circuitry. Then there’s the accidental damage that goes along with lugging your devices to and from the office, not to mention the increase in forgotten charging cords, power supplies and other vital equipment.

Phone, laptop and tablet repair costs are quickly becoming a significant business expense – but do you know how much they’re really costing you? Mobile device repair drains your IT resources and results in downtime for employees who are unable to work. An efficient break/fix and replacement process is essential to help your employees stay productive.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Tablet or Laptop?

Tablet repair costs vary widely based on the age of the device, the model and the repairs needed. Screen replacement alone can vary by hundreds of dollars. For a newer iPad model, it can cost anywhere from £160/€180 to £320/€360, but older models may cost less. Other common tablet problems, like faulty charging ports or volume buttons, cost around £80/€90 to fix.

So how much does laptop repair cost? Laptop screen replacement may cost more than a tablet because they have larger screens. Faulty power jacks, broken keyboards and fans and other common hardware problems cost between £80/€90 and £198/€237. Larger laptop repair costs like issues with the motherboard or hard drive can easily run you more than £320/€360.

The True Cost of Mobile Device Repair

Putting a price on mobile device repair isn’t easy for a business, and the above costs don’t take into account lost productivity. When nearly 20% of mobile devices break or go missing each year, the burden falls on your IT staff. Yet one of the top complaints by IT staff is that they don’t have enough time to complete their current workload.

Have you ever asked yourself just how much time your IT department wastes on workforce technology deployment? Physically running around gathering and replacing broken devices or supplying cables? Consider this:

  • The average fully-burdened labor cost for IT technical work ranges between £52/€62 and £103/€123 per hour
  • When working in an office, it takes about an hour to exchange a device manually
  • The average number of laptop and devices exchanges per week per location is around 5

That’s over 250 hours and nearly £20,975/€23,529+ per year just to exchange devices! While it may not be possible to eradicate all system and equipment issues, there’s a better solution to decrease device downtime and reduce workloads – and you won’t need to hire more people, create more manual workarounds or outsource the issue.

How to Streamline Your Mobile Device Repair Program

By deploying a cloud-based smart locker such as a FUYL Tower, you can eliminate many of the manual workflow processes of break/fix programs, simplify replacing damaged, lost or forgotten devices, and help lower your laptop and tablet repair costs.

Automate Your Break/Fix Program

Looking for an IT cost savings idea? Centralize and automate your time-wasting manual device exchanges with a smart charging locker. A FUYL Tower allows you to keep several devices charged, secure and connected in an accessible location.

When a staff member breaks a device, simply send them to the locker to get a replacement. Not only does this solution save time and money, but it can also make your team’s lives easier. Employees can simply swap their broken device for a new one and be on their way with a new device. With FUYL Towers and the powerful LocknCharge Cloud platform, a manual process that once took an hour to complete now takes less than a minute.

With FUYL Towers, a manual process that once took an hour to complete now takes less than a minute.

To automate this process even further, LocknCharge Cloud can be integrated with your current IT ticketing system, such as Incident IQ, Learn21 One2One Manager, ServiceNow or another ITSM platform with API integration. Then you can automatically find a Tower bay that is suitable for the user and notify the user with directions to collect their device.

Simplify Equipment Distribution

FUYL Towers accommodate and charge almost any device, with or without cases. But what happens when your employee needs a different piece of equipment, such as a replacement cable? Or when HR has paperwork to be signed? Employees often need more than just a laptop to perform their jobs.

With a FUYL Tower, simplify the distribution of any item that fits a 73 (H) x 365 (W) x 438 (D) mm slot. Grant specific users access to individual bays by using their RFID badge or assigned PIN code. Employees can then easily access supplies, and you can view a detailed event log to know who accessed bays and when.

Streamline the Process for Ready-to-Go Devices

With a FUYL Tower filled with ready-to-go devices, you’ll reduce in-person interactions and speed up the check-in/check-out and mobile device repair process. Just ask the IT team of one of the largest energy companies in the U.S. who recently automated their device check-in/check-out process.

They deployed a fleet of mobile devices for their customer-facing departments to achieve greater operating efficiencies, adapt to evolving regulatory requirements, provide complete and accurate information to field employees and better communicate with the field.

They needed to implement a system to help manage these mobile devices. With the FUYL Tower, the IT team can assign specific lockers and devices to employees and restrict and monitor access to these devices. This process added another layer of accountability for employee devices and streamlined IT’s ability to manage thousands of devices remotely. FUYL Towers helped automate a manual process for managing devices and ensure that field technicians have the information they need to do their jobs effectively.

Choose the Right Secure Charging Locker

By automating the clunky mobile device repair and replacement process, LocknCharge FUYL Tower 5 or 15 charging lockers allow organizations to save a considerable amount of time, not to mention reduce staff frustration caused by frequent interruptions.

5 Smart School Tech Investments – and Why Smart Lockers Top the List

1-to-1 student device programs are becoming the norm for many school districts, and investing in support for technology is no longer optional. 64% of UK schools use technology in everyday teaching and learning practices.

It’s more important than ever that schools fully support the digital tools that enhance learning outcomes for students. Here are a few ideas for smart investments that will make the best use of limited resources.

1. Invest in Future-Proof Technology

"Future-proof" does not simply mean something will last forever – but rather, that will provide value well into the future. So even as technology advances, future-proof charging solutions are able to evolve to meet your ever-changing needs.

On average, mobile devices in schools are refreshed every 3 to 5 years. It’s important to consider the amount of time and energy expended every time you go back to the drawing board to re-evaluate your technology stack. Imagine the resources your district would save if you didn’t need to replace your charging solutions every time your mobile devices are updated.

Consider investing in a future-proof Joey Cart or Carrier Charging Station by LocknCharge. These solutions combine universal charging, open-concept designs and durable hardware, that will meet your needs for years to come.

Using smart technology, such as smart lockers for schools, is also an investment that will save considerable time and resources long term. The FUYL Tower, for example, keeps devices secure and charged in individually-lockable bays while Admins remotely control user access through a cloud-based portal.

FUYL Towers offer workflow flexibility so that schools can support automated broken device exchanges, no-contact loaner device check out, and secure, public charging on demand. Because LocknCharge Cloud is supported by an agile, in-house software development team, schools can be confident that the Cloud platform is supported at every turn. New, customer-centric features are added on a weekly basis, and industry-standard cyber security measures are always in place.

2. Explore Low-Cost, High-Value Solutions for Modernization

iPads and laptops enhance student learning, but millions of classroom devices lose their charge in schools every day. The obvious solution is to plug those devices into any available wall outlet. However, access to outlets may be limited and plugging too many devices into one outlet can cause a general electrical overload. Not to mention, devices that are charging on a counter or floor are not protected against breakage or theft.

Consider investing in technologies that modernize your school's infrastructure without costly facility upgrades. For example, the high-capacity Revolution 32 Cabinet eliminates the expense of installing new outlets. The station’s ECO Safe Charge™ Power Management System reduces the possibility of blowing a circuit when as many as 32 laptops are plugged in to a single outlet.

Vauban, a private education institution in Luxembourg, utilized FUYL Towers to support their approach to digital learning and to modernize their facility. At Vauban, each student takes ownership of their iPad containing digital textbooks. FUYL Towers promotes accountability for students by offering a secure place to charge a device during the day, keeping them on track in their classwork.

3. Consider Security Improvements

Did you know that in a 2021 survey, 36% of primary schools and 58% of secondary schools in the UK reported cyber security breaches in the last 12 months?

Would it surprise you to find out that a sizable number of breaches are caused by unintentional disclosures or theft/loss of portable devices?

A smart end-of-year budget investment is one that protects against data security breaches, costly device deployment setbacks and inefficient device downtime.

Implementing durable, secure charging stations and smart lockers for schools will physically protect devices and the data that's on them – not to mention decrease costs of lost hardware.

Plus, using a FUYL Tower to automate manual processes for managing mobile devices will free up tech team’s time so they can focus on upgrading network security and protecting student data from cyber attacks.

4. Support Teachers With Time-Saving Tools

With limited educational resources, a smart investment also includes a strategy to deploy valuable tools and resources to the people who need them most.

Ideally, your plan should support teachers by saving them valuable classroom time. For example, one cabinet-style cart can gobble up an additional 70+ hours of class time per year, simply in passing out and collecting devices. Our unique and innovative basket designs reduce the time teachers spend distributing devices, as well as time children spend queuing up to put them away. This means teaching can happen faster – saving over two weeks of instructional time per cart each year!

Hear from Shane Austin of Cooper Middle School as he talks about how the Putnam 16 Charging Station has helped him save valuable teaching time. The short cord system allows students to easily plug in iPads at the end of the day, and the external LED charging status display shows when devices are charged and ready to be used.

Another important time-saving tool for teachers and IT staff are smart lockers for schools. When a student's device breaks, a FUYL Tower can automate the exchange of a new one in just minutes, without the need for assistance by school faculty. This seamless loaner program ensures class isn’t being disrupted by lost, broken or dead devices.

5. Improve Teacher Training and Device Management Support

Less than 17% of teachers believe that they receive adequate training and support when it comes to educational technologies. Setting aside a portion of your budget for educating the educators is vital to ensure your edtech investments are worthwhile. Without training, teachers may not realize the full potential of new tech, and they may be hesitant to use the technology at all.

When frustration with technology is low and satisfaction is high, teachers are more likely to use new technology to its full extent. Devices can only facilitate learning if they’re charged and ready to use. Smart lockers for schools can alleviate frustration with device management by speeding up broken or lost device exchanges. In just a few minutes, students can self-serve a replacement without disrupting class by using a PIN or RFID to access a new device inside a FUYL Tower Smart Locker.

We’re here to help prepare you for the future. Our team remains committed to assisting you in minimizing disruption and maximizing your budget.

Danone Brand, Blédina, Goes Paperless with iPad® Smart Charging Lockers to Improve Efficiency

February 2022 – Brive, France

Blédina automates IT and employee workflow with a shared iPad device program and FUYL Tower Smart Lockers.

Danone France Bledina Factory Image-Web

Background

As the largest B Corp-certified company in France, Blédina is a leader – not only in the infant food market, but also in its commitment to making a positive impact on society and the planet. In 2020, Blédina embarked on a new and ongoing industrial performance and digital transformation program, utilizing iPad devices to go 100% paperless

Named after the platform their manufacturing team has adopted, “Project Poka” has allowed for digitized industrial training, industrial process training and industrial troubleshooting materials. Poka is a web and mobile app designed for manufacturers to support on-the-floor training, knowledge building and communication. With everything stored digitally, content is easier to track and archive, and staff safety and security have improved.

Challenge

Rolling out new technology is a big undertaking, especially in a company with three production sites and 1,500 employees. Blédina needed a way to secure the new iPad devices and encourage users to take care of the devices during use. Reducing the risk of lost and stolen devices is critical – to avoid the expense of replacing physical assets, and also for protecting valuable company data. The success of Project Poka relied heavily on ensuring iPad devices are charged, connected and accessible at all times.

Solution

Blédina decided that a check-in/check-out iPad workflow, with the ability to assign and restrict access to specific users based on RFID badges and User Groups, was what they needed. They found these capabilities and more in the FUYL Tower™ Smart Locker by LocknCharge.

As a complete hardware and software package with LocknCharge Cloud, Blédina was confident in knowing the FUYL Towers were a solution that would grow with them. They weren’t interested in investing in an entry-level locker system by another brand with a far less future-proof result.

The New Check-In/Check-Out Workflow

Results

To date, 37 iPad devices have been rolled out in their Brive factory. They are utilizing six FUYL Tower 5’s and one FUYL Tower 15, spread out across the factory floor. The contactless device sharing program has freed up valuable time for the Blédina management team, and everyone has been pleased with the results.

Cloud Admins can remotely control locker access, which has helps in a variety of ways. For instance, when a user is returning a device they didn’t originally check out, the admin can remotely open a locker door on any of the seven FUYLs for them. No walking across the factory floor to meet them, and no significant interruption to their day.

Project Poka’s success has already begun a ripple effect throughout the company. One production line has been upgraded from a 5 to a 15-bay FUYL Tower due to demand for more devices. Devices are being used by engineers to report issues on a production line to a remote manager. The manager can receive a solution and troubleshoot immediately.

The Blédina back-office team saw an additional opportunity to improve upon their own processes with the FUYL Tower, and now has an automated workflow with on-demand shared iPad devices. Quick and easy access to these securely stored iPad devices has made their production team meetings a lot more efficient.

The FUYL Towers, along with LocknCharge customer support, have been exceeding expectations at Blédina. LocknCharge released new Cloud features to smooth out some on boarding, troubleshooting and RFID card features for the team, enabling Blédina to scale their device roll out.

What’s Next?

Blédina continues to further scale the roll out of more iPad devices and digitized content. They hope that production orders will be digitalised so staff can receive them in real time on the iPad device. They are also exploring API integration with their factory Active Directory as well as with the ServiceNow platform currently in use.

They have no doubt they’ll be utilizing new LocknCharge Cloud features in the future. They expect to find new use cases for the FUYL Tower – automating new workflows and finding new efficiencies to drive manufacturing excellence and lead by example for all Danone France brands.
