Patrice explains that the main concerns of having technology in the boarding environment is it can be very anti social and you can have issues with online bullying if they have too much access to social media. The FUYL Tower has helped the school get past these pain points and more by providing boarding students with a secure place to store and charge their devices as well as Admins to keep an eye on how many times students are using their devices. The curfew feature has enabled the school to restrict student access to devices during curfew times.

The FUYL Tower has helped resolve a number of issues the school was facing such as uncharged devices, lost locks and keys, insecure location and storage of devices and many more. The FUYL Tower has enabled the IT department to allocate a locker to each student and linking the locker to a students existing student card. This means that only the student and admin have access to their locker.

Rob Armstrong, Head of ICT at Peace Lutheran College, explains how the LocknCharge FUYL Tower has helped stop unauthorized access to devices by boarding students outside of allocated hours.

Prior to the FUYL Tower, students would be using devices at all times of the day and night. The school struggled to keep student devices charged and secured. Now each student has an RFID enabled student card which is used to access their allocated locker. The Curfew feature means that students no longer have access to their devices during the curfew specified times.

Planning for the Unplannable

Background

The small Cleveland, Ohio suburb of Shaker Heights is proud to be known as “a vibrant, desirable hub for cosmopolitan living.” It’s not by accident, either. As one of the first planned cities, and as a city actively focused on inclusion and integration since the 1950s, they’ve earned the reputation – and their top-notch school system is an integral piece of that.

Shaker Heights City School District is one of just eight public districts in the nation to be recognized as a PreK-12 International Baccalaureate Continuum District. Meaning they provide the rigorous, internationally recognized and globally focused curriculum of the IB Programme to their 5,000+ students across all grade levels.

Another thing they provide for those 5,000+ students? Chromebooks. As they’ve transitioned to a predominantly 1:1 tech ratio over the past few years, they’ve approached their mobile device deployment with the same careful planning their whole community is known for:

  • All Shaker Heights teachers went through the training, practice and exams to become Level 1 Google Certified Educators.
  • The district’s tech team investigated a range of Chromebook charging solutions – ultimately deciding on centralized smart lockers in common areas.
  • They tested various locations throughout their middle school and high school to determine where the lockers would get the most use and least opportunity for student shenanigans.
  • They did their homework, so to speak.

Challenge

No one planned for a global pandemic. Not even Shaker Heights.

Solution

They adapted. Worldwide, COVID-19 rushed school districts into remote learning. Thankfully for Shaker Heights, they had set themselves up with agile technology that made it a fairly smooth transition. I think it’d be a lot more cumbersome on school staff, on my staff, and on our parents and students,” said Ailiff. His team has heard nothing but positive feedback from parents, too.
